Biewer-Yorkshire "a la Pom Pon" History

Biewer Yorkie History
Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom Pon History in Germany

The history of the Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom Pon only goes back for 20 years.  It's a very beautiful, loveable breed who should finally be shown.  To show this breed would clear all of the speculations and unclearness of the breed.

On January 20, 1984 a new Yorkshire breed was developed from a mutation.  This was the climax of 20 years of successful breeding by Gertrud and Werner Biewer.  The parentage of the newborn were "Darling von Friedheck", the Worldjuvenile Champion in 1981 at Dortmund and "Fru-Fru von Friedheck", the Worldjuvenile Champion of 1981 in Dortmund Germany.  These two parents gave birth to the first white/blue/gold Yorki, named "Schneeflockchen von Friedheck".

Out of this chance breeding, the Biewer family began breeding they're multi-colored Yorki's.  The name, "Biewer-Yorki" comes from Gertrud and Werner's family name, "Biewer".  But how did the name "a la Pom Pon" develop?  "A la Pom Pon" is French and means "ball-tangle", "higgledy-piggledy", just like the coat of the Biewer Yorki.

Unfortunately, Werner Biewer died in 1997 and his wife, Gertrud Biewer now lives in Solms/Watzler (Germany) together with her Yorki's, but she doesn't breed anymore

The general appearance of the Biewer Yorki should be that of a long-haired toy terrier.  The hair should be shiny and fine like silk, without undercoat, straight and it should fall symmetrically on each side in a parting from the nose to the end of the tail.  The outline should convey the impression of a powerful and proportional body.  The head should be small and flat.  It should not stand out too strongly or have a round skullpan, nor should it have a long nose.  The nose should be absolutely black in color.  The hair is long, whit-blue-gold and symmetrically colored.  Medium-sized, dark and sparkling eyes should give the picture of an intelligent dog.  The little V-shaped ears must be upright.  There should be a symmetrical scissor or level bite.  On equal importance is the absolutely straight and good muscled legs, which are to be covered with hair.  The paws are round as possible with white or black nails.  The neck hair is white or touched with a slight blue-white color or totally blue without any brown tones.  The hair on the chest, stomach and legs is absolutely white.

The Biewer Yorki needs a lot of care to avoid matted hair, you must comb and brush it regularly.  The coat is fine and silky, so it is easy to keep it beautiful.  Some owners decide to keep the dogs in a short haircut, because it looks better than a matted coat if they do not have the time to keep it bathed and combed.
The Biewer Yorki will continue to gain in popularity by breeders, exhibitors and enthusiasts worldwide.  Since 1984, the Biewer Yorki has reached national and international recognition with many awards and certificates of merit at exhibitions.  The Biewer Yorki is not a member of the VDH in Germany.
